Premiato dal Gambero Rosso, con due foglie, l’olio NOTTURNO dell’Antico Frantoio Lopes
The farm, owned by young entrepreneur Gianluigi Cava, is spread over several territories in the municipality of San Demetrio Corone, a town in the province of Cosenza.
The origins of the company itself date back to the 15th century, when Duke Teodoro Lopes was granted dominion over the lands of the farmhouse of San Demetrio. The oil-producing tradition, handed down by Teodoro, found its highest expression with Don Pasquale, descendant of Teodoro and great-grandfather of Gianluigi, who achieved an excellent result in oil production, obtaining, even at the end of the 1930s, national recognition and awards.
Fascinated by his family’s tradition in olive oil production of excellence, Gianluigi now leads the company towards ambitious goals. His challenge has been to combine tradition with innovation, with the sole aim of achieving ever higher levels of quality in organic olive production.
Its ambition to diversify into the production of a niche organic evo oil is also seen in the refinement of materials, packaging and techniques for harvesting and storing the oil. In fact, it has completely abandoned obsolete cans, replacing them with Bag in Box and Puch-up, innovative containers that facilitate transportation and guarantee the best preservation of the product, thanks to the avant-garde system that prevents light and oxygen from deteriorating the qualities of the oil itself.
Animated by the desire to achieve excellent quality, Gianluigi has created 5 selections of Oil: in addition to two Monocultivars and a Blend, we find Baby Bio and Notturno. The Baby Bio, obtained from hand-picked and selected olives, is specially designed for children’s nutrition and ideal for the weaning stage thanks to its delicate taste.
For the realization of the Notturno, they wanted to experiment with nighttime olive harvesting, which, in the eyes of many, might seem like “madness,” but, the young entrepreneur explains that “the low temperatures recorded during the night, preserve the quality of the olives, preventing any unwanted fermentation, and help to better express the organoleptic characteristics of the oil.”
This is how NOTTURNO organic extra virgin olive oil was born, awarded two leaves by Gambero Rosso magazine and featured in the Oli d’Italia 2022 guide.
